Nessa said it at the workshop. Ira Glass said it in my new favourite video. Jack White said it. The awesome Brainpickings has an indexable list of other people who have said it.

Do work. Do more work. Do good work. Do work.

I could list a 1000 “even ifs” and make this painful to read, but I won’t because the advice is universal.

And I am attempting it. I want to close the gap. I want to grow in my creativity. I want to do good work.

Or Austin, specifically…btw, the flirt scene from Whip It! is one the guilty pleasures of my hipster alter ego. Also, Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore are amazing.

Ahem. Austin.

My iPhone guidebook described it as “the red headed stepchild of Dallas and Houston” which in my brief touristy three days there, sounded pretty damn accurate.  There’s a reason why the catchphrase is “Keep Austin Weird.” Thankfully, I’m weird too, so I loved it.

There were predictable pleasures: the rise of the Capitol building while walking up Congress Street, funky shops and open air street markets in SoCo, independent bookstores, BATS!, food trucks, TexMex, and four course plant food meals. (Austin is basically heaven for someone who is 98% vegan.)

And then there were the unexpected ones: an amazing anarchy and revolution in illustration exhibit at the Mexic-Arte Museum, trees, the Niépce heliograph (widely accepted as the first photograph ever made) at the Harry Ransom Center, trees, squirrels, trees.  Funny, the things you really miss when you live in the deserts of Qatar…
